Nikos (Nikolaos) Maliaras

Nikos (Nikolaos) Maliaras is a Professor in the sector of Historical and Systematic Musicology at the University of Athens. A Greek musicologist specialising in the history of musical instruments, he studied philology at the School of Philosophy at the University of Athens and piano at the National Conservatory of Athens. As a postgraduate student, he furthered his studies in Byzantine philology and history, musicology, and music pedagogy at the University of Munich. He was awarded the degree of Magister Artium (MA) in 1988 with a final dissertation on the music analysis of Haydn’s early string quartets, and completed his PhD with honours in 1990. His PhD dissertation, included in the University’s publications, was titled ‘Die Orgel im byzantinischen Hofzeremoniell des 9. und des 10. Jahrhunderts: Eine Quellenuntersuchung’.

Maliaras has held various academic positions, including research collaborator at the University of Munich, research assistant in musicology at the University of Crete, and faculty member in the Department of Music Studies at the University of Athens since 1995. He teaches courses on the history of music, history of musical instruments, and music analysis. His research interests are focused on the analytical study of Manolis Kalomiris’s music and other representatives of the Greek national school of music, as well as Byzantine sacred music and musical instruments through the examination of historical, philological, archaeological, and iconographical sources. Additionally, he has studied and published works on Bach and Brahms.

Maliaras has held other significant positions, including conductor of the choir of the Department of Music Studies, conductor of the Children’s Choir ‘Manolis Kalomiris’ which collaborates with the National Opera House, the Athens Festival, and the Athens Concert Hall, president of the committee of the Athens Youth Symphonic Orchestra, general secretary of the Association ‘Manolis Kalomiris’, member of the Board of the National Music Council of UNESCO, and member of the association of the friends of the Greek Music Library.

His writings include “Die Orgel im byzantinischen Hofzeremoniell des 9. und des 10. Jahrhunderts: Eine Quellenuntersuchung” (1991), “To ekklisiastiko organo” (1993), “To dimotiko tragoudi sti mousiki tou Manoli Kalomoiri: Mia istoriki kai analytiki proseggisi” (2001), and “Vyzantina Mousika Organa” (2007).
