Nikos I. Synodinos

Νίκος I. Συνοδινός

Greek National Opera

Nikos I. Synodinos, born on December 6, 1922, in Athens, studied music in various disciplines including advanced theory, classical singing, piano, wind, and percussion instruments. He specialised in orchestral and choral conducting as well as opera direction, while also engaging professionally in prose theatre. He served as the director of the Greek National Opera and collaborated with institutions such as the National Theatre, the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation, the Greek National Tourism Organisation, and the European Cultural Centre of Delphi.

During the late 1950s, while working at the Greek National Opera and the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation, Synodinos also contributed to the Athens Festival at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, overseeing artistic direction and organisation. His role at the festival included facilitating live broadcasts of concerts across Greece, ensuring that even those outside Athens could experience performances by both Greek and international artists. In 1964, he took on the responsibility of directing the Tourist Artistic Events Service at the Greek National Tourism Organisation, managing a wide range of cultural events throughout the country.

His tenure at the Greek National Opera was marked by his dedication to enhancing the organisation’s artistic and cultural impact. He played a pivotal role in renovating the Olympia Theatre, updating the repertoire, and ensuring the company’s participation in the Athens Festival with significant works from both opera and ballet, often in collaboration with renowned international artists. This period is considered a significant phase in the history of the Greek National Opera.

Nikos I. Synodinos passed away in November 2008 at the age of 85.
