University of Athens
Markos Tsetsos is a Professor of Aesthetics of Music at the University of Athens. He completed his PhD in musicology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1999, graduating with honours. He earned a Magister Artium in symphonic orchestra and opera conducting from the State Conservatorium “Rimsky-Korsakov” of St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1993, also with honours. His academic journey began with a diploma in classical guitar from the Athens National Conservatory in 1986, graduating with honours.
Since joining the academic staff of the Music Department at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 2001, Tsetsos has progressed through the ranks from Lecturer to Professor. He has contributed to the scientific community as a board member of journals such as Mousikologia, Axiologika, and Signum, and has been involved with the Sakis Karagiorgas Foundation and the Hellenic Musicological Society. Additionally, he collaborates with the Greek State Scholarship Foundation and contributes to the musical encyclopedia Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (MGG). He has participated in over fifty conferences both in Greece and internationally.
Tsetsos’ research interests include the aesthetics of music, general aesthetics and philosophy, Greek art and popular music, with a focus on value and normativity, critical theory, and philosophical anthropology. His scholarly work has produced numerous books, including “The Musical Good. Theories of Artistic Value” (2020), “Greek Music. Issues of Ideological and Institutional Critique” (2013), and “Music in Modern Philosophy. From Kant to Adorno” (2012), all published in Greek.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Tsetsos has an extensive artistic background as a guitarist and conductor. He has received awards in both international and national guitar competitions and has recorded LPs and CDs featuring works by composers such as Vivaldi, Villa-Lobos, and Castelnuovo-Tedesco. As a conductor, he has collaborated with major Greek orchestras, including the Athens State Orchestra, ERT National Symphony Orchestra, Athens Camerata, and the Orchestra of the National Opera.
