Painter, Set Designer, Costume Designer
Vasilis Vasileiadis (1927–1991) was a prominent Greek painter, set designer, and costume designer whose contributions left a lasting impact on both visual arts and theatre. Born in Nea Ionia, his life was tragically cut short by an accident in 1991.
At just 17 years old, Vasileiadis was admitted to the Athens School of Fine Arts as an exceptional talent. He studied under renowned teachers such as Konstantinos Parthenis and Umvertos Biskinis, developing a deep passion for painting and theatre. He simultaneously attended the Drama School of the Athens Conservatory, studying with A. Veakis and D. Roditis. His artistic journey continued in Paris, where he received a scholarship to study at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and pursued additional training in set design at the Paris Opera.
Upon returning to Greece, Vasileiadis balanced teaching and creative pursuits. He taught at the Doxiadi School and the Karolos Koun Art School before being elected as a supervisor in the decoration and set design department at the Athens School of Fine Arts, where he taught for 14 years. During his career, he designed sets and costumes for major institutions such as the National Theatre of Greece, the State Theatre of Northern Greece, and the Art Theatre. He also participated in numerous exhibitions, earning significant acclaim for his work.
Vasileiadis was profoundly influenced by his friendship with Giannis Tsarouchis, who described him as “an artistic prodigy with rare design talents and an innate sense of decoration.” Other notable figures also praised his work. Pantelis Prevelakis wrote, “Mr. Vasileiadis is a capable designer who has also created excellent works as a painter and sculptor. As a set designer, he has received multiple distinctions. He is an inspiring teacher, devoted to his craft, and admired by his students for his impeccable character and profound knowledge.” Similarly, Alekos Kontopoulos remarked, “I became acquainted with the work of V. Vasileiadis and found it to be marked by rigorous execution and poetic evolution, revealing an artist of rare ability.”
Vasileiadis’s multifaceted career and dedication to his craft made him a respected figure in Greek art and theatre, remembered as both a visionary creator and an inspiring educator.
