Oboist
Athens State Orchestra
Vangelis Christopoulos, born in Athens, is a distinguished Greek oboist with a significant contribution to the country’s musical landscape. He graduated from the Athens Conservatory with a diploma in oboe, earning top honours and a first prize. He continued his studies on a scholarship at the Music Academy of Munich, where he graduated with distinction, and attended advanced seminars in Belgium.
In 1970, Christopoulos was selected as principal oboist for the inaugural World Youth Orchestra under Erich Leinsdorf. Since then, he has collaborated with numerous orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra of ERT, the Athens State Orchestra, the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra, the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Sofia, and the Camerata – Friends of Music Orchestra. He has performed recitals in cities across Greece and abroad and has contributed to recordings for albums, radio, television, theatre, and cinema.
As the principal oboist of the Athens State Orchestra and a member of the Greek Wind Quintet, Christopoulos has played a vital role in the Greek music scene. He also teaches at the Nikos Skalkottas Conservatory, passing on his expertise and experience to aspiring musicians.
His performances of works by Eleni Karaindrou, including scores for Landscape in the Mist, The Beekeeper, The Suspended Step of the Stork, and Ulysses’ Gaze, have received widespread acclaim from international music critics.
