Double Bassist
Greek National Opera
Vassilis Papavassiliou is recognized as one of the most accomplished Greek soloists, known internationally for his distinguished performances, including the recording of Nikos Skalkottas’ Concerto for Double Bass and Large Orchestra (1941) for the Swedish label BIS. His talent has been acknowledged by composers such as Theodoros Antoniou, Giorgos Zervos, Lowell Liebermann, Giorgos Koumentakis, Pale Rosza, Vasilis Tenidis, Dimitris Kamarotos, and Teppo Hauta Aho, who have dedicated works to him.
Papavassiliou has shown a keen interest in experimental music and musical theatre from a young age. He is a regular participant at international double bass conferences, such as ISB and Eurobass, contributing both as a soloist and an educator. He has held the position of principal double bassist in the Greek National Opera Orchestra since 1989.
His educational background is diverse and prestigious. He studied at the Hellenic Conservatory under Andreas Rodousakis, furthered his education at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Tomas Martin, and also attended the Juilliard School, where he was under the tutelage of Eugene Levinson.
