Born in Athens in 1971, Athina Fytika began her piano studies at the National Conservatory under Stella Makrygianni and later Chrysí Partheniadi-Flórou. In 1989, she moved to Thessaloniki to study Geology at the Aristotle University, graduating in 1994. She earned her Piano Diploma in 1995 at the Contemporary Conservatory of Thessaloniki under Pavlos Dimitriadis. Her theoretical studies included Harmony at the Athens Conservatory with Yiannis Avgerinos and Counterpoint at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki with Konstantinos Siebis. She further enriched her piano repertoire studies with Domna Evnouhidou before pursuing postgraduate studies at Florida State University (FSU) in the United States.
At FSU, she earned her Master’s in Piano Performance in 1998 under Leonard Mastrogiacomo and her Doctorate in 2004, studying piano with Dr. Carolyn Bridger and harpsichord with Dr. Karyl Louwenaar. Her doctoral dissertation, titled A Historical Review of Philosophy in Teaching Keyboard Fingering from the 16th Century to the Present, reflects her deep engagement with piano pedagogy. She also participated in masterclasses with renowned pianists Raphael Terroni, Martino Tirimo, and Joseph Kalichstein, as well as harpsichordists Arthur Haas and Lisa Crawford.
Fytika has performed piano recitals in Greece, Cyprus, Germany, and the United States. She has presented lecture-recitals on modern Greek music and extensively collaborated with chamber ensembles and vocalists, focusing on contemporary Greek repertoire. She has also shared her research on piano pedagogy at conferences in Greece and abroad.
Professionally, Fytika has taught piano at conservatories and music camps in Greece, served as a graduate assistant at FSU, and worked as a piano instructor at Gulf Coast Community College. Since 2005, she has been a faculty member at the Department of Music Studies, Ionian University, where she teaches piano and piano pedagogy.
