Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos

Λίνος-Αλέξανδρος Σισιλιάνος

University of Athens

Professor of International Law and former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, President of the Marangopoulos Foundation for Human Rights, former President of the European Court of Human Rights, corresponding member of the Academy of Athens, Vice-President of the Institute of International Law, member of the Governing Board of the Hague Academy of International Law, member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, former Vice-President of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, and former member of both the Governing and Executive Boards of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights. He is also a former Vice-President and current member of the Greek National Commission for Human Rights. The author of eight monographs and approximately 120 scholarly articles published in French, English, and Greek in leading academic journals, he specialises in general international law, international human rights law, and the law of international organisations. He has been invited to teach at several prestigious institutions, including the Hague Academy of International Law (1996, 2000, 2005, 2023), the International Institute of Human Rights (Strasbourg, from 1994 to 2024), the Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford (2006), Paris-I Panthéon-Sorbonne (1999, 2003), Paris-II Panthéon-Assas (1999, 2004, 2011, 2016, 2023), Robert Schuman University of Strasbourg (1998, 2006, 2013–2018), Aix-Marseille University (2003, 2004), National University of Ireland (Galway, 2005), Montesquieu University in Bordeaux (2007, 2008, 2010), University College London (UCL, 2012), Saint Louis University in Brussels (2016), Leiden University (2017), Sciences Po in Paris (2018), Humboldt University of Berlin (2019), and Sapienza University of Rome (2023, 2024), among others. He has been awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Redeemer of the Hellenic Republic (2022), the Officer of the Legion of Honour (Officier de la Légion d’honneur, 2021), and the Knight of the Order of Academic Palms (Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes académiques, 2006) by the French Republic. He is an Honorary Doctor of Paris-II Panthéon-Assas University (2021) and the University of Galați (Romania, 2019). He is the son of Yorgos Sicilianos. Source: University of Athens
