Duo Papadopoulou
Yannis Papadopoulos (1941–2019) was a Greek pianist, pedagogue, and musicologist, best known—together with his wife, Anthoula Papadopoulou—as one half of the internationally active Duo Papadopoulou. A graduate with distinction of the Hellenic Conservatory of Athens, he pursued advanced studies in Hannover with Kurt Bauer and Heidi Bung. From 1971 the duo toured widely in Greece and abroad (including Austria, Germany, Hungary, and Switzerland), appeared on Greek and Italian radio and television, and issued recordings. Composers such as Yorgos Sicilianos, Panos Triantafyllidis, and Yorgo Platon wrote for them; their repertoire spanned Bach, Mozart, Liszt, Schumann, Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc, Milhaud, Shostakovich, Skalkottas, and leading Greek contemporaries. Critics consistently praised the duo’s unity, clarity, and technical exactness—often remarking that they “sounded like one performer.” Beyond the stage, Papadopoulos authored educational books on piano playing and music history, prepared transcriptions for two pianos and piano four hands, and taught extensively. He founded the Friends of Music Association of Rafina, serving as its first president (2004–2017) and later as honorary president.
