Director
National Theatre Greek National Opera
Takis (Theodoros) Mouzenidis, born in Trabzon, Turkey, in 1909, graduated from the University of Athens School of Law before pursuing studies in directing in Germany on a scholarship. While in Germany, he also attended courses in philosophy, art history, psychology, and aesthetics at the University of Hamburg. His professional experience there included work with the State Drama Theater and the Scientific Theater Institute of the Berlin University of the Arts. Early in his career, he participated in the 1927 Delphic Festival.
Between 1929 and 1931, Mouzenidis served as director of the Conservatory of Thessaloniki. He later became the permanent director of the National Theatre of Greece (1937–1943) and the Greek Popular Theater of Manos Katrakis. In Thessaloniki, he collaborated with students to establish the Free Theater of Thessaloniki and the experimental Avlaia Theater (Stage) in 1946. Additionally, he founded Greece’s first school of music theater, the Institute of Musical Theatre, in 1952.
Mouzenidis directed around 150 plays, including 20 productions of ancient tragedy, and collaborated with leading actors, set designers, and composers of his time. His work extended to most of the prominent theater companies of his era and included international directorial engagements. As a teacher, he contributed to Kostis Bastias’ Drama School and lectured at universities in Europe and the United States.
A prolific writer, Mouzenidis authored research papers and essays on theater, contributing regularly to publications such as Nea Estia. His leadership roles included membership in the Association of Greek Actors and serving as general secretary of the Hellenic Centre of the International Theatre Institute.
Between 1949 and 1960, he directed four lyric works for the Greek National Opera, presenting 14 productions and revivals at venues including the Olympia Theatre, the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus, and the Patras Municipal Theatre. These works included Don Pasquale, Tosca, Un Ballo in Maschera, and Der Tapfere Soldat.
Mouzenidis passed away in Athens on 8 August 1981, leaving behind a legacy as one of Greece’s most influential theater directors and educators.
