Conductor
Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra
Rumen Bayrakov was a long-standing conductor of the Plovdiv and Ruse Philharmonics. Highly praised for his talent, he was described as a “phenomenon, personality, and interpreter, creating his own style in contemporary Bulgarian musical culture.” His recordings of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 and Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 7, performed by the Ruse Philharmonic under his direction, received the highest critical acclaim.
Born in 1939, Bayrakov graduated from the National Academy of Music “Pancho Vladigerov” with specializations in conducting under Professor Konstantin Iliev and piano under Professor Panka Pelishek. After graduation, he specialized for two years at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, studying under professors Franco Ferrara (conducting) and Guido Agosti (piano). At just 29 years old, he became a conductor of the Plovdiv Philharmonic. Bayrakov passed away more than a decade ago and was posthumously awarded the “Golden Lyre” by the Union of Bulgarian Musicians and Dancers in 2001.
