On May 27, 1965, one of the youngest orchestras in European radio and television was born. It was officially presented at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid with its Founding Director, Igor Markevitch, featuring a program that included works by Prokofiev, Wagner, Falla, and Beethoven.

Following Markevitch, the position was held by Antoni Ros-Marbà (1965-1967), Enrique García Asensio (1965-1984), Odón Alonso (1968-1984), Miguel Angel Gómez Martínez (1984-1987), Arpad Joó (1988-1990), Sergiu Comissiona (1990-1998), Enrique García Asensio (1998-2001), Adrian Leaper (2001-2010), Carlos Kalmar (2011-2016), Miguel Ángel Gómez Martínez (2016-2019), and Pablo González (2019-2023). The RTVE Symphony Orchestra and Choir, 50 years of excellence

The RTVE Symphony Orchestra and Choir is a symphonic-choral ensemble dedicated to the interpretation and dissemination of high-quality musical culture within the framework of the RTVE Corporation. The RTVE Symphony Orchestra celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015. This is complemented by the 65 years of the artistic trajectory of the RTVE Choir. Both Orchestra and Choir form a symphonic-choral ensemble that serves as an ambassador of cultural excellence with a public service vocation.

The RTVE Symphony Orchestra and Choir is the only symphonic-choral institution in Spain that inherently fulfills an audiovisual function, as everything it performs is broadcast through RTVE (TVE, RNE, and RTVE.es). At the same time, it engages in extensive activity recording radio and television themes, as well as soundtracks for TVE series and national and international films. It is a regular presence at major Spanish festivals, and its international dimension is forged through exchanges with the EBU, as well as tours and performances abroad.

Among the recently received awards are the Medal of Honor from the International Festival of Music and Dance of Granada; Extraordinary Golden Antenna to the RTVE Symphony Orchestra and Choir, awarded by the Federation of Associations of Radio and Television of Spain; Iris Award for Best Soundtrack for the TVE series “Isabel,” given to composer Federico Jusid and the RTVE Symphony Orchestra and Choir; and the Special Iris Award from the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Television to the RTVE Symphony Orchestra for its 50 years of brilliant professional trajectory and its contribution to Spanish musical culture.
