Pavlos Mantoudis

Παύλος Μαντούδης

Painter, Set Designer, Costume Designer

Greek National Opera
National Theatre of Northern Greece

Pavlos Mantoudis, born in Athens in 1932, initially pursued studies in Law at the University of Athens from 1950 to 1955. His passion for the arts led him to study drawing and painting under Kostas Eliades at the Free Academy [Eleftheri Akadimia] (1955-1957), followed by an intensive four-year programme in set and costume design at Munich’s Academy of Fine Arts under Helmut Jürgens (1957-1961). From 1960 to 1969, he worked extensively in Germany as a set and costume designer for theatre, film, and television productions. Upon returning to Greece in 1969, he collaborated with both state and private theatres as well as television networks.

Between 1968 and 1992, he designed sets and costumes for eight productions at the National Theatre, and in 1976 he worked on the TV adaptation of Dürrenmatt’s Play Strindberg for ET1’s Monday Theater series. His work with the National Theatre of Northern Greece spanned six productions from 1978 to 1984, and he participated in group exhibitions showcasing his art in Greece and internationally. Mantoudis began teaching set design at Vakalo Art and Design College in 1982 and has also translated theatrical plays.

His extensive collaboration with the Greek National Opera (GNO) from 1967 to 1994 included over 50 productions and revivals. For the GNO, he designed sets and costumes for eleven operas, including The Barber of Seville, The Magic Flute, Macbeth, Susanna’s Secret, The Sleepwalker, Il signor Bruschino, The Cloak, Sister Angelica, Gianni Schicchi, Rigoletto, and The Fire (by Yorgos Sicilianos). His repertoire also featured the operetta House of the Three Girls and the ballet The Magic Toyshop (Grimanis/Rossini).
