Nikos Christodoulou has collaborated as a conductor with many orchestras in Europe, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, Odense Symphony Orchestra, Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra, Bolshoi Opera, among others. His discography of Nikos Skalkottas’ symphonic works for the BIS label, in collaboration with European orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, has received numerous international accolades in Europe and America. He works with Greek symphonic orchestras and the Greek National Opera. He has served as the director of the Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of the Municipality of Athens and the ERT Symphony Orchestra. He founded and was the Director of the Euro Youth Philharmonic, the first pan-European youth orchestra.
He has composed works for orchestra, choir, ensembles, stage music, and songs. He collaborated as a composer with the Third Programme and wrote music for the series “Here Lilipoupoli”. Many organizations have commissioned his compositions. He conducted his work “Debussy Preludes in orchestration by N. Christodoulou” (published by Boosey & Hawkes) in Athens, Yerevan, and London, and in September 2016, this work opened the International MITO Festival in concerts with the London Symphony Orchestra and G. Noseda in Turin and at La Scala in Milan.
He studied composition with G.A. Papaioannou at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, piano (Diploma) with M. Mourtzopoulos and G. Platon at the Greek Conservatory, and orchestral conducting at the Royal College of Music in London. He studied Greek philology at the University of Athens. He was the artistic director and curator of conferences dedicated to Dimitri Mitropoulos (Athens, 1996), Skalkottas (Berlin, Konzerthaus, 2000 – Athens, Megaron, 2017), Chopin (2010), and Debussy (2012). He has published articles and studies on Skalkottas, Chopin, Mitropoulos, and Seferis (“The Musical Seferis”, published by the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank of Greece).
