New Helsinki Quartet

Joel Laakso, the 1st Principal Cellist of the Royal Danish Orchestra—the world’s oldest orchestra—has performed extensively across Europe, the USA, South America, Africa, China, Japan, and Australia. He has appeared as a soloist with renowned orchestras, including the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Tapiola Sinfonietta, and the Royal Danish Orchestra, performing concertos by Haydn, Beethoven, Saint-Saëns, Schoenberg, and Tishchenko. He is the Artistic Leader of the Riihimäki Summer Concerts and was a member of the New Helsinki Quartet from 2000 to 2014, now playing with the Poseidon Quartet.

Joel began his cello studies at the age of five at the Riihimäki Music Institute and later continued at the Sibelius Academy under the tutelage of Martti Rousi, Erkki Rautio, and Marcel Bergman. He also studied at the Edsberg Chamber Music Institute in Stockholm with Torleif Thedéen.

He plays a Nicola Amati cello from the early 17th century, generously loaned by the Royal Danish Orchestra.
