Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation
The ERT National Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1938 and covers the classical, Greek and foreign repertoire. It has presented works by important Greek and foreign composers, conductors and researchers through recordings, live broadcasts from radio and television as well as concerts in Athens and the surrounding area.
Its directors were Giorgos Lykoudis, Spyros Farandatos, Antiochos Evangeliatos, Giorgos Sisilianos, Franz Litschauer, Efthimios Kavallieratos, Miltiadis Karydis, Alkis Baltas, Andreas Pylarinos, Nikos Christodoulou, Vladimiros Symeonidis.
The National Symphony Orchestra of ERT was conducted as guest collaborators by many Greek and foreign conductors as well as internationally renowned composers, such as: Manolis Kalomiris, Dionysios Lavragas, Dimitris Mitropoulos, Miltiadis Karydis, Angelo Cavallaro, Aram Khachaturian, Giorgi Lechel, Yehudi Menuhin, Choir f Neumann , Anton Nanut, Rolf Reuter, Christian Lindbergh, Christian Mandeal, Loukas Karytinos, Miltos Logiadis, Byron Fidetzis, Dimitris Horafas, Odysseas Dimitriadis, Andreas Paridis, Vladimir Symeonidis, Michalis Oikonomou, Tasos Symeonidis, George Petrou, Andreas Tsikas, Nikos Tsouchlos.
Many famous artists, Greek and foreign, have collaborated with the orchestra as soloists such as: David Oistrach, Gina Bahauer, Jose Carreras, Agnis Baltsa, Vasso Papantoniou, Montserrat Cambage, Platido Domingo, Rolando Villazon, Leonidas Kavakos, Dimitris Sgouros, Roberto Alania, Angela Georgiou, Andrea Bocelli, Jose Cura, Juan Diego Flores.
The National Symphony Orchestra of ERT has appeared repeatedly at the Herodeum, in the context of the Athens Festival, the Patras Festival, the Belgrade Festival, the Cairo Opera House, Montreal, Cologne, Paris, Istanbul, at international music events in collaboration with E.B.U. (European Radio Union), in the Athens Concert Hall and in cities in Greece. In October 2006, the National Symphony Orchestra performed in concert at the United Nations General Assembly Hall and Lincoln Center in New York. In October 2007, at the Beijing Polytheater, he performed the opening concert of the events for the cultural year of Greece in China.
Today the Orchestra is considered one of the most dynamic, efficient and active symphony groups in Greece. From December 2022, the internationally renowned conductor Michalis Economou has been the chief musician of the orchestra.
