Choir

Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation

The ERT Choir was founded in 1977 by Manos Hadjidakis, who was the director of the Third Program of Radio at the time. It was established as the “Third Choir” in collaboration with Antonis Kontogeorgiou, who was the organizer and chief conductor. It soon became one of the best choirs in the country.

Its repertoire, which includes over 900 compositions, features works for choir and orchestra by J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, Bacalof, Beethoven, Berlioz, Bernstein, Brahms, Britten, Bruckner, Corette, Debussy, Dvořak, Elgar, Faure, Haydn, Holst, Janacek, Kancheli, Kodaly, Liszt, Mahler, Mendelssohn, Milhaud, Mozart, Orff, Pergolesi, Prokofiev, Rossini, Saint-Saëns, Shostakovich, Fl. Schmith, Schubert, Schumann, Scriabin, Stravinsky, Szymanowski, Taneyef, Verdi, and Vivaldi.

The choir has given special importance to premieres of Greek works, including compositions for choir and orchestra, a cappella choir compositions, and operas. Some of the operas in their repertoire are Aida (Verdi), Capuleti e Montecchi (Bellini), Norma (Bellini), Carmen (Bizet), Les Troyens (Berlioz), L’Orfeo (Monteverdi), Tristan und Isolde (Wagner), and others.

During the period 1993-94, under the direction of Mikis Theodorakis, the choir significantly increased its international activity, performing at various festivals and venues worldwide, including in Canada, the United States, Turkey, Tunisia, Cyprus, and China.

In 2004, the choir participated in the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Athens. Moreover, in October 2007, it gave the inaugural concert at the Polytheater in Beijing as part of the cultural year of Greece in China.

Over the years, the ERT Choir has collaborated with renowned Greek and foreign conductors such as K. Masur, G. Menuhin, I. Fischer, M. Plasson, V. Askenazy, D. Kitajenko, and N. Marriner.

In recent years, the choir has been led by musical directors Dimitris Bouzanis, Dimitris Ktistakis, and Angeliki Ploka. The choir is currently directed by Michalis Pappetros.
