Les Corps glorieux

3. L’ange aux parfums

Creator: Olivier Messiaen

Work Type: Music

Date: 1939

Description:

Les Corps glorieux, Sept visions brèves de la Vie des ressuscités (The Bodies Glorious, Seven Brief Visions of the Life of the Resurrected) is an extensive organ cycle composed by Olivier Messiaen during the summer of 1939 in Saint-Théoffrey (Isère). The composition was finalised on 25 August 1939, shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, and was first performed by Messiaen himself on 15 April 1945 at the Palais de Chaillot. This work signifies a pivotal development in Messiaen’s musical style, blending aspects of Indian classical music with Gregorian chant. It stands alongside “L’Ascension” (1934) and “La Nativité du Seigneur” (1935) as one of Messiaen’s foundational organ cycles.

L’ange aux parfums (The Angel with the Incense), the third piece in Les Corps glorieux, showcases a range of musical textures from simple monophony to intricate counterpoint. The piece starts with a unison melody that serves as a cantus firmus. This is followed by a rapid section where the ascent of the incense is depicted through swift semiquaver runs, which are abruptly halted to conclude the movement. The movement’s epigraph, from Revelation 8:4, states: “The fragrance of incense rose up to God with the prayers of the saints from the hand of the angel.” This piece exemplifies Messiaen’s talent for creating evocative and spiritual soundscapes using his distinctive harmonic and rhythmic techniques.
