A public concert where the compositions of the three finalists were performed for the first time by distinguished soloists.
Following the performances, the Competition Jury proceeded with the award ceremony.

 


 

Finalists

The three finalists, selected after a long process from many high-level entries, are:

  • Christos Zoumbos (3rd Prize)
  • Orestis Papaioannou (2nd Prize)
  • Giorgos Papaoikonomou (3rd Prize)

 

 

*No 1st Prize awarded


 

Event Highlights

The event also included a short musical tribute featuring works by Yorgos Sicilianos, performed by Maria Eustratiadi (Head & Professor of the Piano School at the Athens Conservatoire)
and Elli Filippou (Professor at the Cello School of the Athens Conservatoire).

About the Competition

The 1st Composition Competition in memory of Yorgos Sicilianos (1920-2005) was an initiative by the Athens Conservatoire to mark the 10th anniversary of the distinguished composer’s passing.
Co-organized with the Union of Greek Composers and supported by the composer’s family, the competition aimed to encourage and highlight talented young composers in the field of contemporary music creation.

The competition was announced in May 2015 with an open call for submissions meeting the following criteria:

  • Original compositions lasting 12 to 15 minutes for a chamber music ensemble consisting of three to eight of the following instruments: flute/piccolo (one performer), oboe/English horn (one performer), clarinet/bass clarinet (one performer), bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, violin (up to two performers), viola, cello, double bass, piano.
