Abstract or Summary:
The emergence of the first significant figures of the post-war generation of Greek avant-garde brings to the forefront composers with different starting points in artistic thought, yet united in their common perception of expressing the “new.” Among other aspects, the contributions are examined comparatively not only in the field of composition but also in teaching (Papaioannou), the formation of a modern musical syntax under new interpretations of tradition (Dragatakis), as well as the incorporation of the concept of Greek identity within the framework of a cosmopolitan internationalism with indigenous roots (Sicilianos). Mixtures, contrasts, and musical identities highlight multifaceted aspects of creation, aesthetics, ideology, and the presence of these composers in the domestic musical life of the 1950s-70s, and also during the transition to the 1980s.
