Analytical and Interpretative Approach: Yorgo Sicilianos’s Works for Two Pianos

Author(s): Apostolos Palios

Abstract or Summary:

This article focuses on Sicilianos’s works for two pianos. It examines the suite Tanagraea op. 17c, which consists of nine movements. The initial version of this piece was written for two pianos and percussion and was originally composed as a ballet. It also discusses Contrastes op. 48, a three-movement piece that includes an introduction derived from a Renaissance theme by Orlando di Lasso. The article analyzes both compositions in terms of their structure, composition techniques, program content, pianistic texture, timbre, and the way the composer crafted the dialogue between the two pianos. It highlights the points of convergence and divergence between the two works to provide a meaningful approach for aspiring performers.
