Abstract or Summary:

The article delves into Yorgos Sicilianos’ musical works and their evolution, emphasizing his meticulous compositional process, innovative use of musical techniques, and significant contributions to modern piano music. It highlights his initial reluctance to use the piano for compositions in favour of larger orchestral ensembles, and his creative applications of serial techniques and rhythmic structures in his piano works.

Particular focus is placed on Sicilianos’ major works for piano, such as the Eight Children’s Miniatures, Op. 23 and the Etudes Compositionnelles, Op. 32, which showcases his dedication to expanding the expressive capabilities of the piano. The article describes his methodical approach to blending traditional and modern elements, his innovative use of the Fibonacci sequence in rhythmic themes, and his ability to evoke a wide range of tonal colours and dynamics. Through these works, Sicilianos demonstrates his technical prowess and offers a fresh, imaginative interpretation of the piano’s potential.

An abbreviated version of this article forms part of the English supplement at the end of this volume (pages 272-274).
