Ellie Filippou was born in Athens in 1978. She studied cello at the Athens Conservatoire, graduating in 2005 from the class of Dimitris Gouzios with honors and a unanimous first prize. She continued her studies at the Vienna Conservatory (Konservatorium der Stadt Wien) in the classes of Andreas Lindenbaum and Robert Nagy. Her studies followed at the Carinthian Conservatory in Austria (Kärtner Landeskonservatorium) in the class of Milos Mlenjnik, where she graduated in 2010 with unanimous distinction. Filippou has participated in numerous international chamber music festivals, such as the Wiener Festwochen, Bebersee Festival Berlin, and Bayreuther Osterfestival. She has collaborated with internationally renowned ensembles (Klangforum Wien, Krenek Ensemble, Österreichische Gessellschaft für Neue Musik) and well-known orchestras (Sinfonietta Baden, Academia Ars Musicae, Kärntner Sinfonieorchester, Orchestra of the Greek Radio, Orchestra of Colors). She has attended numerous international seminars on chamber music and contemporary music. She distinguished herself in the international ‘Allegro Vivo’ competition in Austria for her performance of Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C major. In 2007, along with Nina Popotnig and Christine Kranzelbinder, she founded the piano trio “Echos”, with which they received an Excellent Diploma in Chamber Music at the Kärntner Landenkonservatorium (class of E. Fister). With this ensemble, they have been distinguished in many international competitions (15th Brahms International Music Competition-Austria, ‘live music now’ of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation), have recorded for Austrian Radio ORF, and participated in many international festivals (Kultursommer St. Paul, Santorini International Chamber Music Festival, etc.). They regularly perform concerts in Greece, Italy, Austria, and Slovenia. Since 2012, Ellie Filippou has been a professor at the Athens Conservatory and a member of the Academica Athens Orchestra.
