Description:

In an interview with Vangelis Psyrrakis for the newspaper Μεσημβρινή, published on 16 February 1967, Yorgos Sicilianos discussed the upcoming premiere of  Tanagraea Op. 17b in its ballet form by the Greek National Opera. Sicilianos highlighted that this new version of “Tanagraea” is an evolution from an earlier piece performed by Dora Vlastou in 1958. He explained that the new orchestration, scenario, and overall approach reflect the changes over nearly a decade. The idea to develop the myth into a more comprehensive ballet came after the Greek National Opera decided to include it in its ballet programme. Originally written for two pianos and percussion, Sicilianos now presents it for a large symphony orchestra, believing this enhances the theatrical and choreographic immediacy, making it more engaging for the audience. The myth’s development introduces additional characters such as the Witch, the Evil Spirit, the Faun, and the Chorus, enriching the narrative and musical structure.

Sicilianos praised the collaborative efforts of the production team, including choreographer Angelos Grimanis, who worked diligently despite Sicilianos’s high demands, and Giorgos Vakalo, whose designs for costumes and scenery brought a unique and creative flair to the ballet while adhering to classical traditions. Conductor Antiochos Evangelatos was responsible for teaching the music, with lead roles performed by Kelly Christoforidi as Tanagraea, Julia Rallidou as the Witch, and Attila Silvester as the Faun. Sicilianos also mentioned his recent completion of Episodes, a piece for chamber orchestra, which will debut at the Second Week of Contemporary Music at the Hilton from 29 March to 4 April 1967.
