Συνέντευξη Στο Β' Πρόγραμμα Του Ραδιοφωνικού Σταθμού Αθηνών Πριν Από Την Παράσταση Του Χοροδράματος Βάκχες

Type: Interview (Radio)

Language: Greek

Year of Publication: 1959

Description:

In a 1959 interview on the B’ Programme of the Athens Radio Station, Yorgos Sicilianos discussed the state of dance in Greece and his work on the ballet The Bacchantes No. 1, Op. 19. He highlighted the challenges facing the Greek arts, noting that unlike theatre, which had seen some success, dance had struggled to gain a foothold due to limited resources and state support. Despite these obstacles, Sicilianos expressed hope for the future of Greek dance, praising the dedication of individuals who had worked tirelessly to develop the art form in the country. He emphasised that the progress made was commendable, considering the adverse conditions and lack of institutional backing.

Sicilianos also spoke about the intricate relationship between music and dance, particularly in the context of ancient Greek tragedy and modern ballet. He explained that while music in ancient tragedy complements the dialogue, in ballet, it leads the movement. Regarding The Bacchantes, Sicilianos collaborated with choreographer Rallou Manou to convey the passion and catharsis of the myth without the use of spoken words. He acknowledged the complexities and logistical challenges they faced, including the need for more rehearsal time. Despite these hurdles, Sicilianos expressed gratitude towards those who supported the project and hoped the performance would bring joy and appreciation to the audience.

Broadcast on 17 February 1959.  The text of the interview was planned to be printed in the Benaki Museum’s publication Για τη Μουσική (On Music). However, the book’s editor Elly Yotopoulou-Sicilianou decided to exclude it. A copy of the original manuscript for the whole book was given to Anastasios R. A. Mavroudis.
