Interview for the Newspaper "Kathimerini"

Συνέντευξη Για Την Εφημερίδα «Η Καθημερινή»

Type: Interview

Language: Greek

Year of Publication: 1977

Description:

In this unpublished interview dated 20 October 1977, Yorgos Sicilianos discusses the state of music in Greece over the past three years and potential future developments. He highlights two main areas of concern: the condition of state-controlled music institutions (such as the Athens State Orchestra, the Greek National Opera, and the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation) and music education. Sicilianos praises the Greek National Opera for its consistent efforts and initiatives, including modern performances and promoting Greek artists. However, he criticises the lack of adequate funding and proper facilities, which hampers their potential.

Regarding music education, Sicilianos points out the outdated programmes and insufficient methods in schools, despite recent approvals for new curricula for primary and secondary education. He emphasises the need for a Higher Music School in Greece, which would ensure professional training and opportunities for young musicians. He also stresses the necessity for independent and well-funded orchestras in Athens and Thessaloniki to foster a vibrant musical environment. Sicilianos concludes by advocating for better career prospects and support for musicians to sustain the future of Greek music.

The text of the interview was planned to be printed in the Benaki Museum’s publication Για τη Μουσική (On Music). However, the book’s editor Elly Yotopoulou-Sicilianou decided to exclude it. A copy of the original manuscript for the whole book was given to Anastasios R. A. Mavroudis.
