Zlatko Balija

Violinist

Zagrebački kvartet (Zagreb Quartet)

Zlatko Balija (April 11, 1927 – April 20, 1970) was a Croatian violinist renowned for his contributions to classical and chamber music. Born in Split, he began his violin studies at the Music School in Osijek under J. Kugli. He furthered his education in Vienna (1943–1945) with F. Bruckbauer and at the Zagreb Academy of Music, where he graduated in 1957 under the tutelage of I. Pinkava.

Balija’s professional career commenced with the orchestra of the Croatian National Theatre (HNK) in Osijek (1945–1947). He then joined the orchestras of Radio Zagreb and the Zagreb Philharmonic (1947–1955). Between 1958 and 1964, he alternated between these two ensembles. On September 1, 1964, he became the concertmaster of the HNK orchestra in Zagreb.

As a chamber musician, Balija was active in the Radio Zagreb Chamber Orchestra from 1951. He co-founded a piano trio with S. Radić and M. Nagy (1953–1959), performing across Croatia and recording for various radio stations. After a brief tenure with the Zagreb Soloists (1956–1957), he joined the Zagreb Quartet in 1957, serving until 1967. During his time with the quartet, they received several accolades, including the City of Zagreb Award (1957, 1964), the Milka Trnina Award (1961/1962), and the Vladimir Nazor Award (1965).

Balija’s career was marked by his dedication to both orchestral and chamber music, significantly influencing Croatia’s musical landscape. He passed away in Zagreb on April 20, 1970.
