Greek National Opera
Born in Athens in 1940, Yorgos Stafetas studied classical singing and theatre. He taught classical and art song, as well as opera and speech therapy, at the Andreas L. Kordos Conservatory. In addition to his musical career, he published five poetry collections and participated in the recording of the opera Conroy and His Copies (1995).
Stafetas joined the Greek National Opera (GNO) Chorus in 1966 and, from 1971 to 1999, appeared in approximately 63 productions and revivals. His repertoire included featured and supporting roles in 24 operas and six operettas. His operatic performances spanned works such as Madama Butterfly, Tosca, La bohème, Adriana Lecouvreur, Die Zauberflöte, Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Gianni Schicchi, Manon Lescaut, Boris Godunov, Otello, Don Quixote, The Fire [I Fotia], Conroy and His Copies, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Die Kluge, and Falstaff.
In operetta, he sang principal roles in The Godson [O Vaftistikos], The Apaches of Athens [I Apachides ton Athinon], Das Dreimädelhaus, Die Fledermaus, Die Lustige Witwe, and Das Land des Lächelns.
Yorgos Stafetas passed away on December 25, 2022.
