Performer Information

Tatiana Varouti-Mamaki

Τατιάνα Βαρούτη-Μαμάκη

Choreographer, Dancer

Tatiana Varouti-Mamaki, born in Kiev in March 1921, was a prominent figure in Greek ballet and choreography. Her formal training began at the Marie Reymont School of Ballet in Athens, followed by studies in Warsaw, London, and the Olga Preobrajenska School in Paris in 1949. A founding member of the newly established Greek National Opera (GNO) ballet, her career spanned 41 productions and revivals between 1939 and 1963.

Her debut as a principal dancer included roles in the ballets The Peddler (O Pramateftis), The Eagle (O Aetos), and The Death of the Valiant Woman (O Thanatos tis Antreiomenis), as well as in operas such as Die Fledermaus, The Masterbuilder (O Protomastoras), and Les Contes d’Hoffmann. Between 1948 and 1963, she choreographed ballet segments for operas and operettas, including Das Land des Lächelns, Die lustige Witwe, Samson et Dalila (Herodeion, Athens Festival 1960), Faust, Norma (Epidaurus, Athens Festival 1960), Don Pasquale, Un Ballo in Maschera, Gräfin Mariza, and The Mother’s Ring (To Dakhtylidi tis Manas).

As a principal dancer, Varouti-Mamaki also collaborated with the Royal Theater and choreographed ancient dramas for the Epidaurus Festival between 1954 and 1977. Her talents extended to film, where her choreography enriched productions like The Godson (O Vaftistikos), The Neighborhood Girl (To Koritsi tis Geitonias), and The Sweetheart of a Shepherdess (O Agapitikos tis Voskopoulas). Additional contributions included choreography for radio and television programs.

Beyond performance, she co-founded a dance school with Helen Pfeffer-Tsoukala and actively participated in the arts community. She served as a member of the board of the Hellenic Centre of the International Theatre Institute and held leadership roles as vice president and president of the Athens-based club Toda. She also co-owned the art galleries Rotonda and Rotonda II.

For her contributions to the arts, she was honored with a grand art medal from France. Tatiana Varouti-Mamaki passed away in Athens on 23 January 2007, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Greek dance and choreography.
