The Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra was formed in 1945. Its roots lie in the 100-year history of orchestral traditions in the cultural center of Thrace. The orchestra consists of over 100 professional musicians and performs a rich repertoire of classical and modern symphonic music. Many concertmasters began their careers with the Plovdiv Philharmonic and now work with world-renowned orchestras such as the Metropolitan Opera and the Dresden State Chapel.

Famous conductors of the Plovdiv Philharmonic include Vladi Simeonov, Ruslan Raichev, Dobrin Petkov, Nayden Todorov, Emil Chakarov, Rumen Bayrakov, Ivan Spasov, and Vasil Kazandjiev. The orchestra has been conducted by international maestros like Janos Ferencsik, Enrique Batiz, Jan Krenz, and has featured soloists such as Sviatoslav Richter, Nikolai Ghiaurov, Stoika Milanova, and Ludmil Angelov. They have performed in countries like Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Italy, Austria, France, and Greece, with their success documented in numerous LPs, audio and video recordings, and CDs​​.
