Petros Fyssoun

Πέτρος Φυσσούν

Actor, Director, Narrator

Petros Fyssoun (October 5, 1933 – December 5, 2016) was a Greek actor and director. Born in Russia (with some sources noting Agrinio) to a refugee father who settled in Greece after the Russian Revolution, Fyssoun graduated from the Drama School of the Art Theater in 1954. Until 1956, he collaborated with the renowned Art Theater of Karolos Koun. From 1961 to 1965, he was a leading actor at the National Theater, later forming his own company and staging post-dictatorship revues by Kakoulidis-Konstantaras-Tsiros in Thessaloniki and Athens (1974-75). His career included significant work at the State Theater of Northern Greece from 1976 to 1978, performing in nearly every genre, including drama, comedy, tragedy, and revue.

Fyssoun’s talent brought him to prominent festivals, such as the Cannes Film Festival (1965), Moscow and Leningrad (1966), and the Athens, Philippi, and Epidaurus Festivals. A troupe leader and theatrical entrepreneur, he also contributed as a member of the Consumers’ Institute. Among his numerous awards were Best Male Role at the Greek Film Festivals in 1963 and 1964 and at the Ithaca Theater Festival in 1975.

A resident of Athens, Fyssoun spoke English, Russian, and Swedish. His first marriage to Swedish actress Mod Hansson was brief; his second, to Teta Chatzichristou (daughter of Kostas Chatzichristou and Mairi Nikolaidou), produced a daughter, Ania Fyssoun, who later became a monastic under the name Porphyria in 2004. His brother, Kostas Fyssoun, was also an actor (1936 – June 23, 2020).

Fyssoun passed away at 83 from a respiratory infection at Athens’ La Sotiria Hospital on December 5, 2016. His funeral took place at the church of Agios Nikolaos Pefkakion on December 7.
