Orchestra
Radio-télévision belge de la Communauté française / Belgian Radio-television of the French Community
The RTBF Symphony Orchestra was a former Belgian symphony orchestra that was dissolved in 1991.
The origins of the orchestra date back to the establishment of the Symphony Orchestra of the INR (National Institute of Broadcasting) in 1931, under the leadership of Franz André. It was renamed the Grand Symphony Orchestra of the INR-NIR in 1935.
In 1960, the ensemble was renamed again as the Grand Symphony Orchestra of the RTB-BRT.
In 1978, the Grand Orchestra was split into two separate ensembles, one Walloon and the other Flemish. From these, two symphony orchestras were formed by incorporating the chamber orchestras of the RTBF and the BRT, resulting in the New Symphony Orchestra of the RTBF and the BRT Philharmonic Orchestra.
The main mission of the RTBF’s orchestra was to promote contemporary creation, particularly Belgian music. The orchestra performed several concerts per week, including one broadcast live every Friday night from the large Studio 4 in Flagey.
In 1985, the New Symphony Orchestra of the RTBF was renamed the RTBF Symphony Orchestra.
In 1991, the RTBF management decided to dissolve the orchestra.
