Chorusmaster
Bulgarian National Radio Mixed Choir
Mihail Milkov was a highly esteemed Bulgarian choir conductor, celebrated for his long-standing leadership of the Bulgarian National Radio’s Mixed Choir. Born on January 22, 1923, in Lom, Bulgaria, Milkov pursued his studies in choral conducting under Svetoslav Obretenov at the Sofia Music Academy. His early career saw him leading the choirs of the “Proletarii” factory and the Medical Academy while still a student.
Milkov’s significant contributions began with his direction of the choir “Rodna Pesen,” leading them to prestigious awards including first prize at the polyphonic choral competition in Arezzo, Italy, in 1967. Under his baton, they were also recognized as the best choir in the BBC’s “Let the Peoples Sing” competition. In addition to his work with “Rodna Pesen,” Milkov directed other choirs such as the male choir “Kaval” and the Ruse choir “Danube Sounds.”
His most notable achievements were with the Mixed Choir of the Bulgarian National Radio, a position he held for 40 years. During his tenure, he produced more than 500 recordings for the BNR’s music library, ranging from songs to large-scale oratorios and cantatas, including a vast repertoire of Bulgarian works. The choir under his guidance demonstrated high professionalism, performing independently in concerts, touring abroad, and collaborating with renowned conductors like Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, and Riccardo Muti. Milkov also formed a chamber male choir, participating in performances of Wagner’s opera “Lohengrin” at La Scala in Milan in 1981 and 1983.
Mihail Milkov passed away on January 17, 2003. His invaluable contributions to Bulgarian choral music are remembered and celebrated, and his works remain preserved in the Golden Fund of the Bulgarian National Radio. His legacy in the field of choral conducting continues to be an inspiration for many in the music community.
