Choreographer, Dancer
National Theatre of Greece
Hellenic Ballet
Marmo Georgala, also known as Eimarmeni Georgala-Nikolaidi, was an influential Greek dancer and choreographer, renowned for her contributions to Greek theatre and dance, particularly in the mid-20th century. Born in 1919 in Athens, her talent for movement and expression was apparent from a young age. Despite being largely self-taught, she was accepted into the National Theatre of Greece in 1939, where she danced in both ancient drama and contemporary productions. She also danced in the early productions of the Greek National Opera.
One of Georgala’s most notable achievements was her collaboration with the legendary Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis. She performed in his ballet “Six Folk Paintings” at the Rex Theatre in 1951, alongside Angelos Grimanis. This performance marked a significant moment in Greek dance history, showcasing the artistic synergy between music, movement, and national identity in the post-Civil War era. Georgala’s presence on stage was widely praised for its grace and expressiveness.
Georgala’s career was closely linked with the Hellenic Ballet (Ελληνικό Χορόδραμα), led by Rallou Manou. Through Hellenic Ballet, Georgala worked with many of Greece’s leading artists, composers, and intellectuals, including Odysseas Elytis, Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas, and Yannis Tsarouchis. Her style and performances contributed to the redefinition of Greek dance and its place in modern Greek culture.
Tragically, her promising career was interrupted by a serious car accident in 1965, which significantly limited her ability to continue performing. However, before her accident, she had already made her mark as a choreographer, contributing to productions at the National Theatre of Greece, including Clytemnestra (1956) and Iphigenia in Aulis (1957).
Georgala was also a muse to several renowned Greek poets and intellectuals. Notably, poet George Sarantaris, who was deeply in love with her, dedicated six poems to her in the autumn of 1940, just before his conscription in the Greco-Italian War. Her relationship with prominent figures of the time cemented her status not only as a talented performer but also as an enduring figure in Greek cultural history.
Marmo Georgala passed away in 2008 at the age of 88. She is remembered as a pioneering figure in Greek dance, whose legacy lives on through her contributions to the National Theatre and her influence on Greek artistic movements.
