Kostis Theos was born in Athens. He began cello lessons with Dimitris Gouzios, studied at the Athens Conservatory under Eleftherios Papastavrou, and then at the Royal Academy of Music in London with David Strange. He continued his studies at the F. Liszt Academy in Budapest on an Onassis Foundation scholarship with Laszlo Mezö, and at the University of East Anglia with Matthias Feile, where he obtained his Master’s degree (MMus). He was a member (1987–89) of the European Union Youth Orchestra. Since 2001, he has been the principal cellist of the Athens City Symphony Orchestra. He is also a member of the Greek Ensemble of Contemporary Music, with which he has made many appearances as a soloist. He has participated in numerous chamber music and contemporary music festivals. He has recorded for Naxos the work “Rhythms and Colors for Solo Cello” by Yiannis Papaioannou, a recording that was awarded in 2014 by the Union of Greek Theatrical and Music Critics.

As a composer, he has written music for the ET1 documentary series “Hellenism and the West” and for the feature film “Eleatis Xenos” by Dimos Theos. He has set to music the poetry of Odysseas Elytis and Kaisar Emmanouil. His work “Eridani” for string quartet and cello has been performed by the L’Anima quartet.
