Athens State Orchestra
Ivi Papathanasiou studied piano and harmony at the Municipal Conservatory of Larissa, counterpoint and fugue at the New Conservatory of Thessaloniki, musicology at the Department of Musical Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and cello at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki (class of Dimitris Patras). She continued her studies at the Trinity College of Music in London with Derek Aviss and in 1997 obtained a postgraduate degree with distinction, while in 1998 she completed the Master in Performance and Related Studies from the University of London (distinction for her thesis on “The Suites for solo cello by J.S. Bach and their performance by Pablo Casals”).
She has performed in concerts as a soloist or as a member of chamber music ensembles in Greece, England, and the Czech Republic. She has won many first prizes in competitions at Trinity College, as well as in the string category of the Angloczechoslovak Trust competition. Since 2001, she has been a permanent member of the State Orchestra of Athens. She recorded music by G.A. Papaioannou for a CD released in May 2013 by Naxos, which was awarded by the Union of Music and Theatre Critics in 2015.
