Cellist
Camerata – Friends of Music Orchestra
Ilias Sakalak is a Greek musician and composer known for his work in both music performance and education. He studied theory and composition with Yannis Ioannidis and cello under Byron Fidetzis. In 1983, he earned his Harmony Diploma and subsequently continued his studies in London, where he studied cello with Derek Simpson, Michael Hurwitz, and David Kennedy, and orchestra conducting with Bernhard Keefe and Arthur Davidson. Sakalak also attended seminars with renowned cellist Lynn Harrell.
His career includes conducting notable works such as Rossini’s The Barber of Seville and Puccini’s Suor Angelica with the Symphony Orchestra of Trinity College. He collaborated with composer Christos Pittas in classical theater performances at Epidaurus and recorded for the BBC’s Third Programme in London. Sakalak is a graduate of Trinity College of Music (LTCL – Dip. TCL) and has been recognized for his achievements in chamber music by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity College of Music.
Upon returning to Greece, Sakalak collaborated with the Orchestra of Colours and the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation’s (ERT) Symphony Orchestra. Since February 1992, he has been a member of the Friends of Music Orchestra “Camerata”. He has also taught cello at Campion School.
In 1999, with the sponsorship of the “Kiveli-Horn” fund managed by the Friends of Music Society, Sakalak completed his extensive study on “Physical and Psychological Problems of Musicians”, which was published by Nakas. He is also preparing to publish a new study on Music Psychology.
Sakalak’s interest in music and its impact on health led him to publish the book “Physical and Psychological Problems of Musicians” in 1999. This work explored the potential physical and psychological challenges musicians may face with their instruments. His exploration into music therapy and the broader field of music psychology continued with the release of “Musical Vitamins” in 2004. This book introduced readers to music therapy and encouraged them to explore the impact of music on daily life through listening exercises and examples.
In addition to his musical pursuits, Sakalak has a passion for photography, particularly portrait photography. This interest, inherited from his father, has led him to publish several photographic albums, including “Music Through My Lens”, which captures the essence of musical rehearsal and performance. His photographic work delves into the psychology of his subjects, aiming to capture their essence in a single, timeless image.
