Giorgos Patsas was born in Thessaloniki in 1944. He studied at the Vakalo School, alongside Giorgos Vakalo, Panagiotis Tetsis, and Pavlos Moschidis. He began his professional career at the State Theater of Northern Greece in 1968, designing the set for Molière’s “Tartuffe,” directed by Kyriaki Charatsari. His last collaboration with the NTNG was in 2016 with the play “The Third Wreath” by Kostas Taktsis, directed by Thanasis Papageorgiou.

Giorgos Patsas collaborated with almost all theaters in Athens and international theaters such as Volkstheater in Vienna, Schauspielhaus in Zurich, Stadtheater in Lucerne, Mc Carter Princeton-USA, Landestheater in Tübingen, Germany, the Merida Festival in Spain, Taganka Theater in Moscow, Olympic Theater in Vincenza, Italy, Schauspielhaus in Düsseldorf, and Alexandrinsky Theater in St. Petersburg. His approximately 500 works cover the entire spectrum of set design (opera, drama, musical, classical and contemporary repertoire, cinema).

He systematically dealt with Ancient Greek Tragedy, continuously designing sets at the Epidaurus Festival. Among the awards he received are two Silver Medals from the Prague Quadrennial International Exhibition of Scenography (1995 and 2003) and the Grand Prize of Theater Critics (1998). He served as the president of the Board of Directors of the National Theater and collaborated with the National Opera since 1971. During this long career, he collaborated with many Greek directors, including Minotis, Theodosiadis, Volanakis, Evangelatos, Papageorgiou, Kontouri, Terzopoulos, Vogiatzis, Antypas, and others. His last work was at the National Theater in the play “High Above the Bridge,” directed by his wife Nikaeti Kontouri.
