Giannis Sambrovalakis

Giannis Sambrovalakis was born in Athens in 1975. He studied clarinet at the Athens Conservatoire under H. Farantatos and advanced music theory under P. Koukos. He continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague with P. Woudenberg, earning a master’s degree specializing in contemporary music by Greek, Dutch, and American composers. He furthered his education at the University of Vienna with H. Hajek, focusing on the classical and operatic repertoire of the clarinet. He also holds a degree and is a doctoral candidate at the Department of Music Studies at the University of Athens.

He has collaborated with major Greek orchestras and artistic organizations as a clarinetist, orchestrator, and editor of musical publications. Many Greek composers have entrusted him with the premiere performances and recordings of their works. His discography includes works by M. Adamis, Th. Antoniou, D. Dragatakis, A. Kalogeras, Th. Karyotakis, D. Konstantinidis, N. Mamangakis, and A. Filippakopoulos.

As a soloist, he has performed with the “Enarmonia” orchestra at the Herodeion, the Athens Municipal Orchestra, the University of Athens Orchestra, the New Hellenic Quartet, and the Louisiana Sinfonietta, as well as with the Hellenic Contemporary Music Ensemble. His collaborations with two legends of contemporary music, Gunther Schuller and Steve Reich, are particularly noteworthy.

He is a member of the Greek National Opera orchestra and teaches clarinet at the Athens Conservatoire and the Ionian University.
