Giannis Kyrou

Γιάννης Κύρου

Set Designer, Costume Designer

Giannis Kyrou (Thessaloniki, 1942 – Chania, 1991) was a Greek set designer and costume designer.

He studied set design at the Athens School of Fine Arts and continued his studies in Germany.

Kyrou’s career began in 1967 with his participation in the Choreodrama of Rallou Manou, where he was responsible for set design and costumes in the plays “Pithoprakta” by Giannis Xenakis and “Apology of Clytemnestra” by Thodoros Antoniou. These works were successfully presented at international festivals, such as the Shiraz Arts Festival in Iran.

In the television industry, Kyrou had an extremely active presence since 1975, creating sets and costumes for over a hundred theatrical plays, as well as various TV series and shows. He also collaborated with Michalis Kakogiannis in the film “When the Fish Came Out” (1966) and designed the sets and costumes for the film “Sly Female, Crafty Woman” (1980) by Kostas Karagiannis.

Kyrou did not limit himself to his professional activities but actively engaged in promoting theater and artistic expression in provincial and remote areas, such as the industrial area of Lavrio. In 1982, he moved to Chania, where he founded the Amateur-Experimental Theater ARENA, aiming to provide a platform for theatrical expression beyond professionalism.

Giannis Kyrou passed away in 1991.
