Dionysis Boukouvalas

Pianist, Composer

Greek composer (*1979), member of the Greek Composers Union.

Studies: Musicology diploma from the Athens University (mention “A”). Master’s degree from the university “Paris 8”, where he attended the “Atelier de Composition” of Spanish composer José Manuel López López. Diplomas of Harmony, Counterpoint and Fugue (all with mention “A”). Piano diploma (with mention “A and first prize”).

He has written music for film (pianno, dir. Giorgos Efthimiou, The cat and the canary, dir. Paul Leni), for modern dance (All the way (2014) & Dark Places (2016) with Palmos dance company), for the stage (Michael Ende, Homer, Anthony Neilson, William Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams et al), for literary tributes (Tribute to the French existential philosophers), etc.

His vocal music includes the choral Réjouissez-vous! (on French poetry) and numerous songs on poetry of Edgar Allan Poe, T.S. Eliot, Ugo Foscolo et al.

His concert music (chamber, orchestral and electronic, including a collaboration with Steve Reich) has been performed in the USA, the UK, France, Italy, Lithuania etc. He has won a prize for his composition Chemins Fermés, performed in the Athens Megaron, in memory of Iannis Xenakis.

In popular style, he has set to music lyrics and poetry, including verse by C.P. Cavafy.

His first personal CD with improvisations for piano solo, English gardens, came out in 2011, praised by highly acclaimed musicians such as Ketil Bjørnstad. His second personal release (Aspects of Love) followed in 2018.
