Dimitrios Chandrakis was born in Thessaloniki in 1965. A founding member of the New Hellenic Quartet, he studied violin at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki with Kosmas Galileas and at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien with Günter Pichler. He graduated with a Diploma in Solo Performance in 1988. As a soloist, he has appeared with prominent Greek orchestras. From 1992 to 1996 he was the concertmaster of the Symphony Orchestra of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, and from 1996 to 2003 the concertmaster of the Thessaloniki State Orchestra. His discography includes, among others, all the string quartets of George Sicilianos, Nikos Skalkotas, Mikis Theodorakis, Filippos Tsalahouris, as well as early string quartets by Carl Nielsen and Ottorino Respighi’s major chamber music works. From 1993 and for 20 years he taught violin at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki, and since 2002 he is a Professor of Violin at the Department of Music Science and Art of the University Of Macedonia. He also teaches at the Lefkada Music Week and at the Internationale Musiktage, in Brache, Germany. He has been the president of TMET of the University of Macedonia for two terms
as well as vice president of ETOS of the TSSO. Since 2007  he has been a member of the board of DOATAP. In 2018 he was elected Vice-Rector of the University of Macedonia
His activity with the New Hellenic Quartet, was honored with the “Grand Prize” of the Association of Music and Theater Critics.
