New Hellenic Quartet
Born in Athens, Angelos Liakakis began his cello studies with Christos Sfetsas and continued as a scholarship recipient of the I.K.Y. and Onassis Foundations, studying under Csaba Onczay, Leonid Gorokhov, and Kim Bak Dinitzen.
He regularly performs as a soloist and chamber musician, giving recitals and concerts at major festivals in Greece and abroad. He has collaborated as a soloist with the Athens and Thessaloniki State Orchestras, the Camerata – Friends of Music Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of ERT, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, the Evergreen Symphony Orchestra, and Orchester 1756, among others.
A former member of the New Hellenic Quartet, he has participated in numerous concerts and produced significant recordings for labels such as BIS, EMI Classics, Naxos, and Legend. His repertoire spans a wide range of musical styles, from Baroque to avant-garde, and he maintains strong ties to Greek composers, having premiered many of their works.
Angelos Liakakis is the Principal Cellist of the Athens State Orchestra. Additionally, he teaches cello and chamber music at the Athens Conservatoire and the Kodály Conservatory and regularly conducts cello seminars at the Pelion Festival.
