Performer Information

Andreas Rodousakis

Ανδρέας Ροδουσάκης

Double Bassist

Andreas Rodousakis was born in 1932 and was an esteemed member of the Orchestra of the National Opera of Greece. He studied the double bass with Marios Semitekolo, Principal in the Orchestra of the National Opera and Assistant Principal in the Athens State Orchestra. From 1951 to 1955, he studied at the Small Polytechnic. In December 1957, he became a member of the Orchestra of the National Opera, with which he first played in January 1958 in Aida, the historic first opera presented at the then-new Olympia Theater on Academias Street. The same year, he became a member of the Athens State Orchestra.

As a musician, he elevated the role and technique of the double bass, giving solo recitals, participating in dozens of concerts, and contributing to historical recordings. He was one of Manos Hadjidakis’s closest collaborators. Furthermore, he collaborated with prominent Greek composers such as Mikis Theodorakis, Giannis Markopoulos, Notis Mavroudis, Stavros Xarhakos, Mimis Plessas, and Dionysis Savvopoulos. He played in the “new wave” and collaborated with composers of contemporary music such as Theodore Antoniou, Giannis Christou, Stefanos Vasiliadis, and Michalis Adamis.

Thoughtful, active, and tireless, Rodousakis served as the president of the Association of Musicians and Employees of the Athens State Orchestra and Secretary of the Performers’ Association of the National Opera. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Opera and a special collaborator of the Artistic Director of the National Opera, Loukas Karytinos (with duties as assistant director) for the period 1999-2006.
