Creator: Samuel Beckett
Work Type: Play
Date: 1976
Description:
That Time is a one-act play by Samuel Beckett, written between 1974 and 1975. It features a single character, known as Listener, who is confronted with three voices (A, B, and C) that reminisce about different periods of his life—youth, middle age, and old age. The voices describe scenes of solitude, missed connections, and self-reflection, creating a tapestry of memories and isolation. The play was first performed in 1976 at London’s Royal Court Theatre, specially written for actor Patrick Magee.
Relationship to Sicilianos's Work:
Sicilianos’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra Op. 51 structurally mirrors Beckett’s play That Time by dividing the music into sections corresponding to the play’s voices and thematic shifts. The concerto features three sets (A, B, C), representing the voices in the play that reminisce about different life stages.
