Prophetiae Sibyllarum

Creator: Orlando di Lasso

Work Type: Music

Date: 1600

Description:

Prophetiae Sibyllarum (Sibylline Prophecies) is a collection of motets composed by Orlando di Lasso. This work was composed in the late Renaissance period and published posthumously in 1600. The motets are notable for their highly chromatic style, which was quite innovative for the time. The text of the motets is based on prophecies attributed to the Sibyls, who were ancient prophetesses said to have foretold the coming of Christ.

Lassus’s use of chromaticism in Prophetiae Sibyllarum creates a distinct and intense emotional impact, setting it apart from other contemporary works. The collection includes twelve motets, each highlighting different aspects of the Sibylline prophecies. This work is often considered one of Lassus’s masterpieces, reflecting his ability to blend text and music to enhance the expressive power of the composition.
