Creator: Umberto Saba
Work Type: Poem
Date: 1961
Description:
Foglia (Leaf) by Umberto Saba is a poignant poem found in his collection Il Canzoniere which spans from 1900 to 1954. The poem reflects themes of aging, loss, and the inevitable passage of time. In Foglia, Saba uses the metaphor of a leaf clinging to a bare branch to represent the poet’s own struggle with letting go and the natural cycle of life and death. He addresses a loved one, expressing the difficulty of parting and the emotional weight of farewells, encapsulating the bittersweet nature of life’s end and the persistence of memories.
About the poet:
Umberto Saba, born Umberto Poli on March 9, 1883, in Trieste, was a prominent Italian poet and novelist. His life was marked by a continuous struggle with mental illness, which influenced much of his literary work. Saba adopted his pseudonym in 1910 and published his first volume of poetry in 1911. His work often reflects his personal hardships, including the abandonment by his father before his birth, his mother’s emotional struggles, and the impact of his Jewish heritage during the Fascist period in Italy.
Throughout his career, Saba’s poetry evolved to encompass a wide range of themes, including personal introspection, love, and the complexities of human emotion. His “Songbook” (“Il Canzoniere”), first self-published in 1921, is a collection that grew to include over four hundred poems spanning fifty years. This work is considered one of the most significant achievements in 20th-century Italian literature. Saba’s experiences during World War II, when he had to hide due to anti-Jewish laws, deeply affected his poetry, imbuing it with a sense of melancholy and existential reflection.
Saba’s contribution to literature was eventually recognized with numerous accolades, including the Viareggio Prize in 1946 and awards from the Lincean Academy. He continued to write and receive critical acclaim until his death on August 26, 1957, in Gorizia, Italy. His legacy endures through his profound and evocative poetry, which continues to be studied and admired for its emotional depth and lyrical beauty.
