Ψαράδες και ψαρέματα

Creator: Leon Loisos

Λέων Λοΐσιος

Work Type: Film

Date: 1961

Description:

The short documentary Fishermen and Fishing (Ψαράδες και ψαρέματα) by director Leon Loisos (Λέων Λοΐσιος), with narration by Stavros Tornes (Σταύρος Τορνές), editing by Roviros Manthoulis (Ροβήρος Μανθούλης), and screenplay contributions from Leon Loisos (Λέων Λοΐσιος), Giannis Bakogiannopoulos (Γιάννης Μπακογιαννόπουλος), and Dimitris Kechaidis (Δημήτρης Κεχαΐδης), focuses on traditional fishing and the life of fishermen in the community of Molyvos, Lesbos. The film transports viewers to 1961, capturing the essence of another era through vivid imagery. It portrays daily life in the fishing village, the fishermen’s activities at sea, and community life on Sundays. The scenes include fishermen setting out on “gri-gri” boats, views of the Molyvos settlement, cafés, narrow alleys, the castle, and women chatting and knitting outside their homes. Following the tradition of observational cinema, Loisos’s film was created in collaboration with pioneers of post-war Greek cinema and theatre. Alongside the life of the fishermen, the film observes village life through an anthropological and poetic lens.

Relationship to Sicilianos's Work:

Yorgos Sicilianos composed the soundtrack for the film “Fishermen and Fishing” (Ψαράδες και ψαρέματα), the only such work he ever undertook. Despite having been offered a contract earlier in his life to work as a composer for 20th Century Fox by its then president, Greek-American Spyros Skouras, who held the position from 1942 to 1962, Sicilianos chose a different path. In this soundtrack, Sicilianos captures the scene with the use of traditional instruments such as the santur and the floghera, adding an authentic and evocative layer to the portrayal of the fishermen’s lives and the village atmosphere.
