Creator: Fibonacci
Work Type: Mathematical series
Description:
The Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers where each number is the sum of the two preceding ones, starting from 0 and 1. It begins as 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, and continues indefinitely. This sequence has numerous applications in mathematics and natural phenomena, such as the arrangement of leaves on a stem, the branching of trees, and the pattern of various fruits and flowers.
Introduced to Western mathematics by Leonardo of Pisa, known as Fibonacci, in his 1202 book “Liber Abaci,” the sequence has since been recognised for its appearance in diverse areas including art, architecture, and computer algorithms. The mathematical properties and relationships inherent in the Fibonacci sequence continue to be a subject of study and fascination.
Relationship to Sicilianos's Work:
Sicilianos’s Variations on 4 Rhythmic Themes employs four rhythmic patterns, the first being free and the other three based on the mathematical sequence 1:2:3:5:8. Each pattern corresponds to a unique twelve-tone series, derived from the initial series. As the piece progresses, these patterns intertwine, ultimately playing simultaneously, creating a structurally and rhythmically balanced composition.
See: Variations on 4 Rhythmic Themes, Op. 24 (1963) in texts.
Sicilianos’s String Quartet No. 4 rhythmic construction, is based on a “serial” mechanism that utilises only a few of the infinite possibilities of the numerical relationship 1:2:3:5:8:13, although it creates fairly clear rhythmic patterns, essentially abolishes the musical metre. This grants rhythmic fluidity without resorting to aleatoric solutions.
