Based on texts by contemporary Greek poets, Sicilianos’s 6 Songs, Op. 37 explore the expressive meeting point of music, theatre, and poetry. Written with the intention of creating a kind of “theatrical Lied,” the cycle gives equal weight to sound and gesture, expanding the listener’s emotional perception through techniques that range from recitative and murmuring to inarticulate cries and unexpected silences. While respecting the poetic texts and the natural capabilities of the voice, Sicilianos pushes expression to its limits, crafting works that broaden the possibilities of both music and poetry.

This performance by Duo Vocialo — Ioanna Vrakatseli (mezzo-soprano) and Christos Marinos (piano) — was recorded live at the Music Library of Greece “Lilian Voudouri,” Friends of Music Society at the Megaron Athens Concert Hall on 10 June 2022.
